CAS
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), also called the Tribunal Arbitral du Sport (TAS), is an international arbitration court, which rules as the highest instance in disputes arising from sporting activities. The CAS was established at the International Olympic Committee in 1984 on the initiative of the then president of that organization, Juan Antonio Samarancha.
At the beginning of the nineties of the twentieth century, the CAS became independent organizationally and financially from the International Olympic Committee.
The CAS rules only in the cases voluntarily submitted under its jurisdiction by the international sports federations and national Olympic committees.
The CAS enjoys substantial authority in the sports environment and its decisions materially affect the evolution of sports law.
The CAS has its seat in Lausanne in Switzerland. There are also branches of the CAS in New York and Sydney. If necessary, the CAS also temporarily rules in the cities organizing the Olympic Games.
